Bird flu Suspected In Bali

Almost one hundred chickens have died over the past two months in Bali. Bird flu, also known as H5N1, has reignited fears that the virus may have re-emerged on the island.

“As many as 85 chickens died between February and March, apparently due to the H5N1 virus,” Bali Animal Husbandry Agency chief Putu Sumantra said.

The dead chickens were found in Denpasar, Badung and Tabanan. The Bali Animal Husbandry Agency has taken measures to contain the virus, including exterminating chickens that had shared the same coops with other chickens thought to be infected. The agency is also spraying disinfectants in chicken farms.

“We are counting on every farmer in the area to always maintain cleanliness in their chicken coops,” Putu said, as reported by kompas.com.
